Favignana's Cemetery
The cemetery of Favignana rises in the area of San Nicola above an ancient necropolis, around which stretched a large underground city. The entrance portal of the cemetery will be built in the late '800 early '900 by the architect Filippo La Porta, the monumentalization of the cemetery area is part of the urban transformation plan of Florio. Inside the cemetery is the Church of the Crucifix, built in 1820, but its origin and its worship dates back to the fifteenth century.. The legend says that the church will be built when a deaf mute found in a cave a rough crucifix painted on wood and immediately regained the word. The precious relic was later ruined by restoration and eventually lost, but the cult remained over the centuries.
