Favignana Protagonista di The Odyssey
Favignana Becomes the Cinematic Setting for Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey
The island of Favignana, nestled in the heart of the Egadi archipelago, has been chosen as the filming location for the highly anticipated cinematic adaptation of The Odyssey by Homer, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan.
Filming began in March 2025 and continued for about a month, featuring breathtaking natural sets and a local community thrilled to be part of such a major production.
A Legendary Setting
Favignana, historically known as Aegusa (the island of goats), is traditionally identified as one of the stops in Odysseus' mythical journey. Nolan selected this location for its historical authenticity and scenic beauty, filming in iconic spots like Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra, Cala del Bue Marino, and the Castle of Santa Caterina. These natural settings provided the perfect backdrop to depict the epic voyage of Odysseus.
An All-Star Cast and International Production
The film features a stellar cast, with Matt Damon portraying Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, and Jon Bernthal. The production is managed by Nolan’s Syncopy in collaboration with Wildside, with support from local crew and extras from the Egadi Islands.
A Significant Impact on the Territory
The filming has brought a positive economic impact to the area, with over 400 rooms booked across Favignana, Lipari, and Vulcano to accommodate the cast and crew. The mayor of Favignana, Francesco Forgione, expressed his pride in the island being chosen as a film location, highlighting the importance of this event in promoting the region.
A Visual Epic in IMAX
The Odyssey will be the first cinematic adaptation of Homer’s epic to be shown in IMAX, using cutting-edge technology developed specifically for the film. The movie is scheduled for release on July 17, 2026, promising a groundbreaking cinematic experience.
