Path 4: Faraglioni - Pietre Varate
It is an enchanting walk that starts from the village, along Via Pietrevarate, a paved and little frequented coastal road. The route, really panoramic, winds almost vertically on the cliff that looks south-west, Favignana. On the right the steep slopes of the "greenhouses" covered by an expanse of Euphorbia dendroides alternating with large mastic bushes and, in the most exposed areas, by capers, Agave americana and prickly pears.
After about a quarter of an hour, you reach the small pebble beach in front of the large rocky mass of the Faraglione, favorite destination of seagulls that can be reached in a few strokes. A comfortable path descends towards the sea, here particularly rich in fish. It is an ideal place to admire the sunsets and a good shelter for the winds of mistral and grecale.
Continuing, the road suddenly turns into a narrow path between the rocks below and the overhanging slope, also accessible by mountain bike.
For a few hundred meters along the sea and you can also go down on the large stone slabs that reach the sea, convenient to catch the last sun and a bath at sunset. The path climbs then suddenly and you need to leave the bike. Along 5 bends, crossing a rocky landscape populated by seneci, ferule and agavi, you reach the limit of a beautiful pine forest of Pino d'Aleppo, with large bushes of mastic, kept low by the wind and just above are the houses of Pietre launched, with the sheepfold. Here you can enjoy an extraordinary sunset over Marettimo and Favignana.
Typical vegetation: Aleppo pine, Euforbia dendroides, mastic, caper, senecio, sumac, prickly pear, agave, ferula.
